How long does the surgery take?

The surgery typically lasts 1-2 hours, depending on the specific procedures needed. You will arrive about 2 hours prior to the surgery start time, and spend about 2 hours in recovery. Anticipate being at the hospital for half the day. In some cases, people will stay overnight. If you prefer this, please let us know beforehand!

When can I shower after surgery?

You can shower 48 hours after surgery. Remove the outer dressing but keep the steri-strips in place. Pat the incisions dry after showering.

What if I receive dressings in the mail?

In some cases, we use collagen dressings to help with incision healing postoperatively. In those cases, you will receive instructions along with dressings in the mail about how to change these.

How long will I need to use crutches?

Most patients use crutches for 3-4 weeks after surgery, depending on Dr. Gombera's instructions and your individual progress.

When can I return to sports or high-impact activities?

Return to sports and high-impact activities varies depending on the individual and the specific procedure. It typically takes 6-9 months, but Dr. Gombera will guide you based on your progress. People typically see improvement up to 12 months out from surgery.

Will I need physical therapy after surgery?

Yes, physical therapy is a crucial part of your recovery. It typically begins 3-5 days after surgery and continues for approximately 2-4 months, depending on speed of recovery and what level of activities you want to return to.

How long will I need to wear the brace?

You will need to wear the brace for 4 weeks when walking. You can remove it for exercises, physical therapy, showering, and sleeping.
