Day of Surgery

What to Expect on Your Surgery Day

  1. Your surgery will happen at Texas Orthopedic Hospital. We will call you the day before your surgery with your arrival time, which is approximately 2 hours before the actual surgical start time.
  2. Bring your ice machine sleeve (if purchased) and brace (if fitted before).
  3. You will be admitted and meet with the nursing staff and anesthesia team.
  4. Dr. Gombera will see you before the surgery to answer any last-minute questions.
  5. The surgery typically lasts 1-2 hours.
  6. After surgery, you'll spend approximately 2 hours in the recovery room.
  7. Physical therapists will fit you with crutches or a walker and teach you how to use them.
  8. Before discharge, you'll receive:
    • Post-op instructions
    • A follow-up appointment date/time
    • Exercises to start at home
    • Your crutches/brace
    • A physical therapy order and copy of the protocol
  9. Someone must pick you up from the hospital and stay with you overnight.

Important Notes

  • The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
  • Dr. Gombera uses minimally invasive techniques, typically making 2-4 small incisions.
  • You'll be partial weight-bearing (20 lbs) with crutches after surgery.
